Great Pyrenees were originally bred to protect livestock from predators. This is still a primary purpose of the breed today. Our Great Pyrenees protect our home and family - and take their jobs seriously!
We originally purchased our Great Pyrenees because we had a resident black bear that perused our home on a regular basis. We have lots of coyotes in our area as well. The ever vigilant Avalanche and Kodiak keep them away.
They are loving members of our family and love their jobs taking care of our home, family, and our dog family too!

Great Pyrenees do not bark without purpose. They will bark a lot more when outside (more at night) as they hear their echo in cold weather, the neighbors' dogs far off in the distance, cars from miles away. They will alert you whenever someone is near your home even before they turn into your driveway. They make wonderful guards for livestock and the family. They desire to have a purpose to protect their charges.
They are regal, intelligent, loyal, gentle, strong-willed, fearless, and patient. However, they can be difficult to train. They must have a fenced area or they will roam far away as they patrol. You must be able to be firm and consistent with discipline. They must know you are in charge and you must not let your cute puppy have control as this cute puppy will quickly become large and powerful. You must become the pack leader and offer a strong presence to the Great Pyrenees that offers consistency and firmness with lots of love.

Great Pyrenees shed and require regular grooming to keep their coats maintained. A dirty and wet Great Pyrenees will become clean as soon as they dry as their "weather-proof" coat naturally lets go of the dirt when dry. A regular grooming is required about every 3 - 4 months.
The lifespan is typically in the 10-12 years range.
